An antique rug is one that has been on floors long enough to have earned its character. In the trade the usual threshold is around a hundred years, and the pieces in this collection are the genuinely old ones rather than new rugs given a distressed wash.

What age does to a rug

Two things happen over decades. The natural dyes soften and shift, so a madder red mellows towards rose and terracotta and an indigo relaxes into a gentler blue, often with the gradual banding known as abrash where different dye batches meet. And the pile itself wears down, which exposes more of the knot and gives the surface a low, dense sheen that no finishing process can convincingly fake.

Buying an antique honestly

Old rugs come with history: low pile in the walking lines, reduced or rewoven ends, old repairs, sometimes a shortened length. We photograph every rug individually and we do not hide wear, because on a piece of this age it is part of the object rather than a defect. What matters is that the foundation is sound and the rug is stable enough to use.

Expect Persian, Caucasian, Turkish and Central Asian weaving here, in everything from small tribal pieces to room-size carpets. If you want the aged look without the age, our vintage and washed pieces are a better fit.
