About Us
Family-owned. 45 years of rugs. One showroom in Freeport, NY.
BestRugPlace is the online storefront of Harooni Originals, a family-owned handmade rug business that has been importing and selling authentic hand-knotted rugs for over 45 years. Everything we sell, we own. It sits in our own warehouse and showroom at 371 S Main St, Freeport, New York - not in a supplier's catalog somewhere overseas.
That one fact shapes everything else on this site. Because we buy directly from master weavers and merchants in Iran, India, Turkey, Pakistan and Afghanistan, there is no importer, no distributor and no middleman markup between the loom and your living room. It is also why we can photograph every single rug individually: the rug in the pictures is the exact rug that ships to you, down to the knot.
Visit the showroom
We are a real store, and you are welcome in it. Our Freeport showroom holds one of the largest hand-knotted rug inventories in the United States, including antique and pre-owned pieces, odd and hard-to-find sizes, oversized room-size carpets, runners and rounds. Seeing a rug in person - the sheen of the wool, how the color shifts as you walk around it - is different from seeing it on a screen, and we would rather you loved it in the room than guessed.
Showroom visits are by appointment only. Call 516-330-1100 or email info@bestrugplace.com to set up a time. It means someone is free to walk the floor with you, and we can have rugs in your size and colors pulled and waiting.

What we actually sell
Only genuine handmade rugs. Every rug on this site is hand-knotted or hand-woven by a weaver, in wool, silk, or wool and silk, on a cotton or silk foundation. We do not carry machine-made rugs, printed rugs, or polypropylene reproductions, and we never list a hand-tufted rug as hand-knotted. Our collections run from fine Persian city weaves like Isfahan, Nain, Kashan, Tabriz and Qum, through tribal and village rugs like Heriz, Bijar, Kazak and Bokhara, to new-production Chobi, Ziegler, Oushak and Agra pieces and flat-weaves, kilims and Aubussons.
Each listing tells you the true size, origin, material, construction and age. If a rug is antique, we say so. If it is new production, we say that too.
Buying a rug you have not stood on
A good hand-knotted rug is an investment that should outlive the room you buy it for, so we try to take the risk out of the decision:
- Free shipping and free returns on every rug, both ways, through our FedEx partnership.
- 30-day money-back guarantee. Live with it. If it is not right in your room, send it back and we cover the return shipping.
- Price match. Find the same rug cheaper and we will match and beat it.
- Talk to a person. Call 516-330-1100 and you will reach someone who has handled the actual rug and can tell you how it looks in daylight.
Beyond selling
We also offer professional cleaning, restoration and repair for handmade and antique rugs, we can commission a custom size with one of our master weavers when nothing in stock fits your room, and we run a trade program for designers and a wholesale program for dealers - Harooni Originals supplies rug dealers from coast to coast and outside the US.
New to hand-knotted rugs? Our rug guides cover how to pick a size, what knot count really means, how to care for wool, and how to tell an authentic rug from a copy.
Who runs this
BestRugPlace was started by Joe Harooni, and it started more or less by accident.
In 2020, COVID shut everything down. Joe was a student at Baruch College with a lot of empty time, and his father's rug wholesale business had gone quiet along with everyone else's. The family had spent more than 45 years importing hand-knotted rugs and selling them to dealers around the country, and now the inventory was sitting in the warehouse with nobody coming to buy it.
So he started photographing it. One rug at a time, the actual piece rather than a catalog stand-in, and listing each one online with its real size, origin and condition. It meant somebody in another state could see the exact rug they were buying and pay close to what a dealer pays for it, instead of a retail markup on top of that.
It worked, and it kept working after the world reopened. What began as a bored college student with a camera in his father's warehouse outgrew the wholesale-only setup, and the business moved into its current home at 371 S Main St in Freeport, on Long Island, where the showroom and the warehouse now sit under one roof.
That history is why the site works the way it does. Every rug is still photographed individually, because that is how the whole thing started. We are not a storefront reselling someone else's catalog. We are the wholesaler, and now we sell to you too.
Why people buy from us
Forty-five years, a five-star reputation, and a family name on the door. We would rather talk you out of the wrong rug than sell you one you return. Call us at 516-330-1100, email info@bestrugplace.com, or come see the Freeport showroom in person.
