Modern/Gabbeh/Contemporary Collection

Modern and contemporary hand-knotted rugs, shown newest first. These are the pieces we reach for when a room calls for something quieter than a classical Persian medallion: open fields, soft color, abstract and geometric drawing, and texture doing the work instead of pattern. Every rug here is still genuinely hand-knotted or hand-woven, photographed individually in our Freeport, New York warehouse, and the rug in the photos is the exact rug that ships to you.

What you will find in this collection

Gabbeh: thick, chunky tribal weaves from the Zagros mountains of southern Iran, usually a plain or lightly drawn field in warm natural wool tones. Simple, sturdy and very forgiving in a busy room.

Contemporary and transitional: updated takes on traditional layouts, often in muted greys, sand, ivory, sage and dusty blue, designed to sit comfortably with modern furniture without looking like a reproduction.

Modern abstract and minimalist: plain-field and lightly textured rugs, raised-pile and carved designs, and loose abstract drawing. These read almost as texture rather than pattern, which makes them easy to layer with art and strong furniture.

Vegetable-dyed and washed pieces: Chobi, Ziegler and overdyed weaves with the softened, low-contrast palette that suits contemporary interiors.

Choosing a modern rug

Plain and low-contrast rugs show wear and seams more honestly than a busy traditional pattern, so wool quality matters more here, not less. Everything in this collection is hand-knotted or hand-woven wool, never machine-made or tufted. If you are furnishing a living room, measure so the front legs of your seating sit on the rug; for a dining room, allow about 24 inches beyond the table edge so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out.
