Bijar rugs are woven by Kurdish weavers in and around the town of Bijar in western Iran. They have a nickname in the trade that tells you most of what you need to know: the Iron Rug of Persia.

Built heavier than anything else

Bijar weavers beat the weft down with unusual force, often wetting the wool as they work, which packs the pile into an exceptionally dense, stiff, heavy structure. A Bijar of a given size will noticeably outweigh a comparable rug from anywhere else in Iran. That construction is also why they last: a well-kept Bijar can outlive several generations of the furniture standing on it.

Design and colour

Drawing sits between village geometry and city formality. You will see medallion-and-corner layouts, the allover Herati pattern of rosettes and curved leaves, and sometimes a plain open field that shows off the wool. Colours run deep and saturated: madder red, dark indigo, ivory, and touches of camel and green.

Because they are so solid, Bijars are a good answer for hallways, dining rooms and any high-traffic space where a finer rug would not survive.
