Baluch New Collection

Baluch rugs (also spelled Baluchi or Beluch) are woven by Baluch tribal groups across eastern Iran and western Afghanistan, in and around Khorasan, Herat and Sistan. They are among the most characterful small rugs in the handmade world, and among the most affordable ways into genuinely tribal weaving.

What they look like

The Baluch palette is dark and rich: deep navy and midnight blue, oxblood and madder red, camel, and unbleached ivory used sparingly to outline the drawing. Designs are geometric and repeating rather than curvilinear, with lattices, tree-of-life motifs, stylised birds and animals, and the distinctive prayer-rug format with a stepped niche at one end. Many pieces carry long kilim end panels with tribal weaving worked into them.

Size and use

Because they were woven on portable looms, Baluch rugs are usually small: scatter sizes, prayer rugs, and the occasional runner. That makes them ideal beside a bed, in an entrance hall, under a desk, or layered on top of a larger plain rug. The wool is glossy and hard-wearing, and the dark ground is very forgiving in a busy part of the house.
