Heriz rugs are woven in the Heriz district east of Tabriz, in the mountains of Persian Azerbaijan in northwestern Iran. If a Tabriz is the refined city cousin, a Heriz is the strong, confident country one, and for a lot of rooms it is the more liveable rug.

The Heriz look

The signature is a large geometric medallion with heavy angular corner pieces, drawn in bold straight lines rather than flowing curves. Fields are usually a warm rust or terracotta red, set against navy, ivory and touches of soft green or gold. Because the drawing is large-scale, a Heriz reads clearly from a distance and does not turn into visual noise in a big room.

Why people choose them

Heriz rugs are famously hard-wearing. The wool from the surrounding highlands is high in lanolin, the knotting is robust rather than fine, and the foundation is heavy. That combination is why so many hundred-year-old Heriz rugs are still on floors today. They are a sensible choice for a dining room, a family living room, or any space that takes real traffic. Most of what we stock is room-size, from 8x10 up through oversized pieces.
