Pre-owned rugs are exactly what the name says: handmade rugs that have lived in a home before, taken in through trade-ins, estate purchases and upgrades from our own customers. They are the best value in the shop, and on a hand-knotted rug previous ownership is far less of a problem than it sounds.

Why a used handmade rug is different

A machine-made rug wears out. A hand-knotted wool rug wears in. The wool is high in lanolin, the knots are tied individually onto a cotton or wool foundation, and the structure is designed to be repaired rather than replaced. A rug that has spent twenty years in a living room has usually just lost the mill finish and started to develop the low sheen that collectors pay extra for.

What to expect

Every rug here is professionally cleaned before it is listed and photographed individually so you can see its actual condition. Some pieces are close to new. Others show honest signs of use: lower pile in the walking lines, softened colour, an old repair, occasionally shortened fringe. We describe what we see and we do not stage the photographs to hide wear.

Persian, Turkish, Caucasian, Indian and Pakistani weaving, tribal through to fine city rugs, in everything from scatter sizes to oversized carpets, including many odd sizes you will not find in new production.
