Collection: Traditional

This is the heart of what we do: classical, hand-knotted Persian and Oriental rugs, drawn in the traditional vocabulary that has defined the craft for centuries. If you picture a medallion, a densely drawn border and a field of flowering vine work, this is the collection you want.

The weaving traditions here

Persian city rugs including Tabriz, Kashan, Isfahan, Nain, Qom and Sarouk, drawn curvilinear and finely knotted. Village and regional weaving such as Heriz, Hamadan, Bijar, Bakhtiar and Mahal, heavier in construction and bolder in line. Alongside them sit Turkish, Caucasian, Indian and Pakistani rugs worked in the same classical designs.

The design language

Most traditional rugs are built from a small set of elements: a central medallion, corner spandrels that echo it, a main border with guard stripes on either side, and a field filled with allover pattern. Common motifs include the Herati fish-and-rosette, the boteh (the ancestor of paisley), the Shah Abbas palmette, and garden and vase layouts. Colour is led by madder red, indigo, ivory, saffron and green.

Choosing one

Formal, finely knotted rugs suit sitting rooms and dining rooms. Heavier village weaves suit halls, kitchens and family rooms. Every rug here is hand-knotted wool, or wool and silk, and photographed individually, so the rug you see is the rug you receive.
