This collection gathers the soft, low-contrast, decorative end of handmade weaving: Turkish Oushak, and the Peshawar, Ziegler and Chobi rugs woven in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Different origins, one shared quality, which is that they are easy to live with.

Oushak

Oushak rugs come from western Turkey and have been made since the fifteenth century. They are known for large-scale, loosely drawn floral and medallion designs, an unusually soft silky wool, and a faded, sun-washed palette of apricot, soft gold, pale blue, sage and ivory. The drawing is generous rather than fussy, which is why decorators reach for them constantly.

Ziegler, Chobi and Peshawar

Ziegler describes a design tradition that began in the 1880s when a European firm commissioned Persian weavers to draw classical patterns more openly for Western rooms. Today Ziegler, Chobi and Peshawar rugs are woven in Pakistan and Afghanistan using hand-spun wool and vegetable dyes, then given a wash that mellows the colour. The result is a rug with all-over floral or allover vine drawing in muted rust, cream, grey-blue, sage and soft brown.

Where they work

Because the contrast is gentle, these rugs sit under almost any furniture and rarely fight with wall colour or art. They are our most frequently chosen rugs for open-plan living rooms and for anyone who wants handmade quality without a strong traditional statement.
