Tribal Collection

Tribal rugs are woven by nomadic and semi-nomadic weavers rather than in city workshops, and that difference is the whole appeal. There is no designer's cartoon to follow. The weaver works from memory and from the patterns of her own group, so the drawing shifts as the rug grows, colours change where one batch of dyed wool ran out and the next began, and the two ends are rarely identical.

What is in this collection

This is where our Kazak, Baluch, Gabbeh, Shiraz and Qashqai, Afghan and Caucasian village weaving lives, along with tribal Kurdish and Hamadan pieces. Expect bold geometry: hooked medallions, latch-hook borders, stylised animals and birds, diamond lattices and tree-of-life motifs, in strong madder red, indigo, camel, ivory and deep green.

Living with a tribal rug

Tribal wool is usually hand-spun and high in lanolin, which means a glossy surface that resists dirt and takes wear well. The irregularity that makes these rugs interesting also makes them forgiving in a real household, and the strong geometry works surprisingly well against modern furniture. Sizes tend to be small to medium, so tribal pieces are excellent in entrance halls, bedrooms, studies and layered over larger plain rugs.
